BROKEN
Photographing things or places that are broken or abandoned has always interested me. I am always looking for new things here, from buildings to graffiti covered walls, all beautiful in a broken and desolate way. This will be an ongoing collection and the subject matter does overlap some of the other collections.

Broken farm buildings, Whitford. Kodak Portra 160
I drive past this farm every day. I love overcast skies and dark, stormy clouds, so I waited
months for the right conditions and cloud formations before taking this photograph.

The clouds hung low and heavy over the farm that I drive past every day, flattening the light and
draining colour from the scene. It gave everything a quiet, almost brooding feel that I enjoy.

Dark clouds rolled in and settled over this farm landscape, softening the light and simplifying the scene, stripping everything back to shape and tone.

6 Wolff St, Downtown Auckland. Kodak Ektar 160
A lot of people hate seeing graffitied walls. I think it reminds them of a decaying city. Maybe that’s what I like about it. This was another scene I kept returning to. Each time I was in the city, I’d visit this abandoned building to try to get the shot, but for months, parked cars blocked the view.
It was always a frustrating experience, until one quiet public holiday when I finally got what I was after.

This scene took time to photograph, always waiting to find it without cars parked out front.
I was drawn to the colours and textures of the three window frames and the damaged blinds.
While I was taking the photo, a young man noticed my camera and stopped to talk
about the joys of medium format film photography. I always enjoy a good chat about film photography.

Glenn Innes, Auckland. Kodak Ektar 160
This used to be a fresh vegetable store. Not sure what the intentions are going forward.

This used to be a charity shop. Now it just seems a place to dump unwanted goods
and a haven for youths to graffiti the walls.

Kawa Kawa Bay, Auckland . Kodak Ektar 160
Another abandoned farm just outside of the coastal town of Kawa Kawa.
